DESIGN SYSTEM

For the Sake of Maintaining Consistency and Efficiency

WHY BOTHER?

Design debt is a thing. Over time, elements deteriorate as new content gets added. Check the design system to reduce inconsistencies and quickly identify counterfeit elements parading as the real thing. Plus, save the team time by reusing instead of recreating.

SOME EXAMPLES OF THE DESIGN SYSTEM

Although I was the only designer in the company at the time, I included specifications for both other future designers and developers to reference. The actual design sytem was coded in HTML and CSS by myself after initially prototyping in Sketch.

BEST PRACTICES

Beyond just marking specifications such as color, sizes, weights, spacing, etc, I added a best practices section beneath all the examples. I didn’t want to just tell people that this is the design system and just follow what I say. I wanted people to understand why it is a good decision to do it one way over another.
